NBA First Week Report

Eastern Conference

Chicago Bulls

The Bulls have made a 3-1 to the season.. So far, as expected its more of the same on defence by Bulls, look for this to continue. They have made two important Signings that of Richard Hamilton who not only brings championship winning experience from his time at Detroit but is always a proven scorer that along with the continued improvement of Noah on offence will only help lower the heavy workload on Derrick Rose, who is the second important signing made, although of course a resigning it gives out all the right impressions about this being a long term possibly career long stay for Rose in Chicago.

Miami Heat

The Heat have started the season 4-0. The Heat are very much the same as a starting unit as last season. However there have been two important developments, firstly the ‘Big three’ have had a full year working together and learning about who does what and when, can only benefit them. Then you have the signing of Shane Battier who while not a regular starter will give the Heat quality minutes of the bench as well as a strong veteran presence in the dressing room.

Boston Celtics

The Celtics have made a 1-3 start to the season. It would appear that out of the three big teams in the east. The Celtics are in the biggest danger of not going deep into the playoffs. The Celtics have still not rebounded from the trade that took Perkins to the Thunder, which put simply has not worked out as they would have hoped. Then you have the fact that the Celtics big three are another year older, which means another year wear and tear, which could lead to the big three really being on the floor at the same time together.

Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks have started the season 3-1. The core of the squad is largely unchanged and there have been no major off season additions. Look for more of the same from the Hawks good in the regular season and then conference semi’s at best.

Philadelphia Seventy Sixers

The 76ers have started the season 2-2. The 76ers scrapped into the playoffs last season and put up a good spirited display again the Heat in the first round. The 76ers have made a lot of off season moves and of the regular starting 5 only E Brand is over 30, this not only means that they have a young team but also one that may well take time to gel. Look for the 76ers to be in the playoffs and maybe depending on seeding making a little bit of noise.

New York Knicks

The Knicks have started the season 2-2. Tyson Chandler is the only major addition that the Knicks have made, which so far has failed to have the desired effects on defence, although more time to gel is probably required. The Knicks seem to be what we thought going into the season very good on offence, but when a game is not so high scoring they struggle.

Orlando Magic

The Magic have started the season 3-1. The Magic have made a few additions to their roster and let a few go, it is debatable if this has made and real difference either way. The key to the Magic’s season is if they can re sign Howard (which looks very unlikely) and if not can they get the best trade for him. It is only at this point where we will be about to make a real judgement on where the Magic are heading at least short term.

Indiana Pacers

The Pacers have started the season 3-1. They are arguable the most interesting team in the eastern conference, they pushed the bulls hard in the first round of the playoffs. They are a very young team with a years more experience under their belt and it will be interesting to see how far in the playoffs they can go. I would say semi finals of the conference playoffs is very obtainable.

Western Conference

Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks have started the season 1-3. They have had a fair about of turnover of players not so much in the starting rotation but more so on the role players side of things. Despite the slow start due to the needed gelling period, there is no doubt that the Mavericks will be in the playoffs once more. A repeat championship however looks unlikely.

Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder have started the season 5-0. As of today it is arguable if the Thunder are in fact the best team in the Western Conference, whilst no major additions where made in the off season. This young team that pushed the Mavericks hard in the conference finals last year are a year older with experience of going deep into the playoffs. It will be interested to see if they can repeat there achievements of last year or go even further.

L.A. Lakers

The Lakers have Started the season 3-2. The Lakers were big losers of the off season when the commissioner blocked their trade for Chris Paul, this lead to the Lakers basically having to give away an upset Odom to the Mavericks. The Lakers still have the main core from their last championship side in 09/10 and look for them to make a big trade before the deadline, in order to make a big push to regain the championship.

San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs have started the season 3-1. After having the best regular season record in the west last year and then being comfortable beating in the first round by the Grizzles. Its hard to see what has really changed, the team in the main is an old team that just got older. The Spurs will easily make the playoffs again but the test will be what happens after.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies have started the season 1-2. The Grizzlies another youngish up and coming team in the west after beating the 8th seed in the west last year and beating the spurs with ease which was followed up by an epic battle with the Thunder in the Western Conference semi’s. The team has changed much but that playoff experience can only benefit them.

Portland Trail Blazers

The Trail Blazers have started the season 3-0. All the talk around the of the off season surrounded the forced retirement through injury of Brendon Roy and the resigning of the massively talented but injury prone Greg Oden. This is a real shame because the Trail Blazers have a very solid team without and with them, one can only wonder what if. Still look for them to make the playoffs once more.

Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets have started the season 2-2. After trading Carmelo Anthony last season and making the players the Nuggets surprised a fair few people. Could it now be that while lacking a superstar type player in the absents of Carmelo Anthony, that they are now a better more rounded team.
New Orleans Hornets

The Hornets have started the season 2-1. The question is although not as good as the trade with the Lakers that was blocked by the commission, could the trade with the Clippers still benefit the Hornets. Could the Hornets become a better all round team if not short team as with what the Nuggets have done but in the long term. As always only time will tell.

L.A. Clippers

The clippers have started the season 1-2. From the moment Chris Paul was traded to the Clippers the talk has been are the Clippers now the best team in L.A., For me this talk is very premature. There is no doubting that not only days the signing of Chris Paul as well as Billups make the Clippers an instantly better and much more entertaining team. The clippers need time to gel as well as sort out a few problem area’s of their team.

The Rest

The East

The Milwaukee Bucks have made a solid start to the season and look for them to fight with the Charlotte Bobcats, Toronto Raptors for the last playoff spot. While the Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, New Jersey Nets and Washington Wizards fight it out towards the basement of the eastern conference.

The West

It looks as though the Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz, will fight it out at the bottom end of the western Conference with one maybe making a push for the 8th seed in the playoffs. Look for Minnesota Timberwolves to be bottom of the standings once more.
