NHL Half Season Report

Atlantic Division

New York Rangers

The Rangers are 27-9-4. The Rangers have the second best goals against per game behind the Bruins, which in large part is down to their Swede Lundqvist. He has been a top goal tender for years now. They also have a top 10 offence in terms of goals per game, so they have a good balance. They are certainly in with a shout of winning the Stanley Cup.

Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers are 22-11-4. The flyers are a top offence team in terms of goals scored per game, only better by the Bruins. Their defence however could do with tightening as they are in the bottom third of the league in goals allowed per game. This would tend to suggest that if your stop their offence from firing which is easier said then done, then you may be able to get the better of them.

Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins are 21-13-4. The Penguins are both top 10 in goals for and against per game. They are not at full strength, with their star player and arguable the league’s finest player in Crosby. He has passed all the tests on his injures and looks sure to return at some point soon. With Crosby in the line up it could be a repeat of a Stanley Cup championship in Pittsburgh.

New Jersey Devils

The Devils are 21 -15-2. The Devils appear on paper and performance so far this season a average well balanced team at both ends of the ice being around middle of the table in the league on both sides. They are one of a few teams who are on the cusp of the playoffs, if they can manage to get into the playoffs, who knows for sure what will happen then.

New York Islanders

The Islanders are 13-17-6. The Islanders are in the bottom quarter of the league for both goals for and against per game played. As you can imagine this is not a great combination, it may now have come time for team management to write off this season and look to next season.

Northeast

Boston Bruins

The bruins are 24-10-1. They have the best points per game average, as well as the best goals for and goals against in the league. At the moment they are undoubtedly the class of the NHL. The question is as is always the case in the NHL, which is such an even and well balanced league is where the best team go onto win the Stanley Cup.

Ottawa Senators

The Senators are 20-15-5. The Senators are a team that can be very hard to beat and then on the next night very easy. By this I mean that they are in the top third in goals per game in scoring and dead last in goals against per game. Their offence should be enough to see them into the playoffs and once their depending on the match up they may be able to cause some damage.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs are 18-15-5. The Leafs are a good prospect on offence being in the top 10 in goals for per game, but bottom third in goals against per game. They have a minus goal difference and if they are to make the playoffs this would likely need to improve.
Buffalo Sabres

The Sabres are 17-17-4. The Sabres are on the a bad run of form going 2-6-2 in their last 10 games, this has left them five points adrift of the final playoff spot in the East. If the Sabres do not pick up form on both sides of the puck soon then any chance they have of the playoffs with disappear.

Montréal Canadiens

The Canadiens are 14-18-7. The Canadiens are in a terrible run of form going 3-7 in their last 10 games. They are 8 points from the 8th seed in the east and if they fail to go on a decent run of form or those above them start to really motor, they the Canadiens will soon be planning for next season rather then the current one.

Southeast

Florida Panthers

The Panthers are 20-12-7. The Panthers are just outside the top third of the league in terms of Goals scored per game and mid table in terms of goals allowed per game. As their record suggests this makes for a very well balanced and solid team, that as things start right now are very likely to make it into the playoffs.

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets are 19-14-5. On their return to Winnipeg the Jets are having a promising first season. As things stand they are the 8th seed in the east of course there is still a very long way to go in the season. They are nearly dead middle of the league on both sides of the puck. In order to have a better chance of the playoffs it would help if they improved on just one side of the puck.

Washington Capitals

The Capitals are 20-15-2. The Capitals seem to be much the same team they have been for the last few season good on offence and not great on defence. If anything they are no longer as good as their were on the offensive side of the puck. After being a high seed in recent years and appearing to either peak or choke when it matters, could they be getting ready to peak when it matters this time around.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The lightning are 17-17-3. The Lightening are fairly good on offence without reaching elite status and very poor on defence. They are on the cusp of either having a good run and making a push for the playoffs as they appear now, or they could have a bad run and be out of the picture within a fairly short about of time.

Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes are 13-21-6. The Hurricanes are realistically out of the playoff picture and in teams of points gained per game are the worst in the Eastern conference. They have been on a better run of form lately going 4-4-2 in their last 10 games, however from their current position much more is needed to make the playoffs and that is very unlikely to happen.

Central

Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks are 24-11-4. The Blackhawks are an elite team led by Patrick Kane on offence., on the other side of the puck they are very solid and rank mid table in the league. With their offence power and solid defensive play they are very much a threat for any team, they could very well go all the way in the Stanley Cup with a bit of luck.

Detroit Red Wings

The Red Wings are 24-13-1. The Red Wings are elite on push sides of the puck ranking in the top 5 in both, which has led to a huge plus goal difference of 39. They are lead by Pavel Datsyuk who ranks in the top 10 for assists in the league along with scoring 12. The Red wings like a few others in the league could without doubt go all the way in the Stanley Cup and are a team to look out for.

St Louis Blues

The Blues are 21-12-5. The blues are third in the league on defence and only twenty fourth on offence. Unlike many other teams in the league they show that you don’t necessary have to be an offensive machine to win in the NHL. In the playoffs when games get tighter look for defence to become more important and this could favour the blues.

Nashville Predators

The Predators are 21-14-4. The Predators are a team like a few others in the league that could either move forward or fall back fairly easily. They are mid table on both offence and defence, a slip on either side of the puck could be damaging to their playoff hopes, where as an upswing in either offence of defence could make them much more save in their playoff position.

Columbus Blue Jackets

The Blue Jackets are 13-21-6. The Blue Jackets are by some distance the worst team in the league and have a very slim to zero percentage chance of making the playoffs. Even if they were to go on a run in the second half of the season which say the Blackhawks or the Rangers have, they would still be short of the playoffs.

Northwest

Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks are 24-13-3. The Canucks are a top 5 team on offence and a top 10 team on defence, this as you would imagine is would lead to making the Canucks a very good well balanced team. The question is not will they make the playoffs, but rather how far will they go and what effect will last seasons heartache have on them.

Minnesota Wild

The wild are 21-13-6. The wild are number 6 in the league on offence and number 29 on offence, once again proving that an elite defence can take a team far. Although not huge scores by any means they are keeping things tight enough at the back and getting key goals when needed. What sort of damage they can cause during the playoffs remains to be seen.

Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche are 22-18-1. The Avalanche are either in the bottom third or close to it on both sides of the puck, their current position as number 7 seed in the western conference tells you that they are vulnerable to fallen out of the playoffs if teams around them improve and they fail to do so, or get worse. One thing is certain it will be an interesting end of the season for the Avalanche.

Calgary Flames

The Flames are 18-17-5. The flames are currently 4 points outside of the playoffs, but because of the overall balance in quality across the league are in no way out of a chance of the playoffs. They need to improve on either or both sides of the puck in order to make a real push for the playoffs.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers are 16-19-3. The Oilers even with so much of the season to go are very much a very distant bet for the playoffs. They are mid table in both goals for an against, but what is costing the Oilers is in tight games they are not doing enough to get the victory and this has hurt them greatly. Their run of 3-7 in their last 10 games has all but killed any playoffs hopes that they had.

Pacific

Los Angeles Kings

The Kings are 19-14-7. The Kings are the lowest goal scoring team in the league but one of the best defensive teams in the league. Their run of 6-3-1 in their last 10 games has seen them under their new coach go from a low position in their division to topping it at present. If their improvement continues who knows where in may take them.

San Jose Sharks

The Sharks are 20-11-4. The Sharks have been a very good team for a while now, however this season it would appear that they are not quite as strong as they once where. As everybody knows in the NHL anything can happen and in a few weeks time, the Sharks may be comfortable in a playoff position.

Dallas Stars

The Stars are 21-15-1. The Stars are very much around mid table on both sides of the puck and their current position of 10th in the western conference shows this to be about right. For the Stars to make a playoff push which is very much within their grasp they need to improve ideally on both sides of the puck bur if not at least one.

Phoenix Coyotes

The Coyotes are 19-16-4. The Coyotes are very good on defence ranking number 10 and very average on offence ranking number 20. In order for them to move up the league they either need to make the push from good to very good/elite on the defensive side of the puck or score more. At this time it is hard to see which way it might go.

Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks are 10-21-6. The Ducks as the second worse team in the Western conference is of no real surprise if you analyse the stats. They are both bottom 5 in offence and defence, this season is already over for them. What the Ducks have to do now is look to build and improve for next season. Weather they manage to do this successfully only the coming seasons will tell.
